Meet Jayne, the founder of The Painted Broom Company, which designs, develops and produces unique gifts by hand from home in rural Gloucestershire. Offering a unique and innovative range for the home, garden and special events.
Why and when did you decide to start your business?
Some years ago, a friend was complaining that she couldn’t find an attractive broom that she could display in her new kitchen and have to hand whenever she needed to sweep her newly installed wooden floor. I had the idea of painting a plain wooden broom in cream with blue polka dots to match my friend’s kitchen and gave it to her as a ‘kitchen warming’ gift. My friend was delighted with her gift and suggested that I tried selling them. Over the next couple of years I sold my hand painted brooms at local craft fairs where I met a lady who suggested that I tried selling online in order to reach a larger audience. After expanding my range to include a number of handmade home and garden gifts, I moved online and The Painted Broom Company was born.
Where do you seek inspiration from for your product range?
I take inspiration from current trends, reworking them to give them my own twist and to transform my handmade wooden products into unique home-wear and gifts.
What are your greatest achievements to date?
My achievements include having products featured in national magazines. I have also had orders from a few famous names and sent orders to some very exclusive addresses including a luxury yacht in St Tropez. In addition, I have had some memorable orders such as one for a large number of birdhouses which were presented to each cast member of ‘The Birds’ on the opening night at The Gate Theatre in Dublin back in 2009.
Who inspires you?
My customers can be very inspirational. I receive many requests for bespoke orders which allows me to work alongside the customer to create something unique and special to them. While this can sometimes be challenging, the process often provides inspiration for new products.
What is important to you in business?
Providing the highest standard of customer care is definitely the most important aspect of my business.
What do you enjoy most about your business?
Without a doubt, the most enjoyable aspect of running my business is knowing that on birthdays and gifting occasions, there will be people will be opening their presents to discover something that I have created.
What has been your biggest endorsement to date you have received for your product/s
The biggest endorsements come from my customers themselves. I am always pleasantly surprised when people take the trouble to get in touch with positive feedback, and of course, when they order again.
Why did you choose to list your products on oodlique?
I was approached by oodlque and liked what I heard so signed up. I’m sure they will be very successful and I am looking forward to being a part of that.
What has your experience been like working with oodlique?
I have found oodlique to be very prompt and helpful whenever I have a query and I am very grateful for all of their help with setting up my oodique store.
What does the future hold for your business?
While I hope to expand my product range, I intend to remain a small business as it is important to me to retain a personal touch. Being small means that I am able to respond promptly to customer’s enquiries, to accommodate bespoke orders and to personally complete and pack each and every order to ensure that everything is exactly as it should be.
